Pringle is still probably best known for its golfer’s argyle and prim cashmere twinsets, and that sort of old-school aristo aesthetic is, of course, one way of being Scottish. But Stringer wants the “of Scotland” in the brand name to mean something else: She wants to remind everyone that Scotland is a wild place, onetime stomping ground of William Wallace and his Braveheart rebels and home to some of the most gorgeous, desolate landscapes on the planet.
The designer, Fran Stringer, either needs to give her vision for a new, wild Pringle more specificity in order to stamp out an identity update or lean harder on the heritage and discover an interest in clothes that are crisp, cheerful, and polite.
